Using natural enzymes, acids, and lightening agents to remove age spots can be an effective alternative to costly cosmetic treatments. Aside from being less expensive than visits to a cosmetic dermatologist, natural methods tend to be gentler and can even nourish the skin while working to reduce the discoloration. Here are a few home remedies you and your senior loved one can try, recommended by Lehigh Valley senior home care professionals.
The citric acid found in citrus fruits helps remove dead skin layers and acts as a lightening agent. Apply the freshly squeezed juice of a lemon, lime, orange or grapefruit two or three times daily to age spots using a well-saturated cotton swab. After six to eight weeks, spots should be fading markedly. Continue treating until the spots are no longer noticeable.
Some plant enzymes work on a cellular level to break apart the melanin that gives age spots their color. Fruits and vegetables rich in these hardworking enzymes include papayas, pineapples, and potatoes. Cut some of any one of those into cubes, put into a blender with its juice, add a teaspoon of honey, and blend to a smooth paste. Spread the mixture over the face, hands, neck, or other affected areas and let dry for 30 minutes. Rinse off and pat dry. Do this daily and your loved one should see results in about eight weeks.
Apply live culture buttermilk or yogurt to age spots two to three times daily. The lactic acid will work to exfoliate and lighten the affected skin. Your loved one can also use yogurt as you would a facial mask. Let dry for 30 minutes, then rinse away. Expect results within four to six weeks.
